Gustavian Sports Updates

SOCCER

The Gustavian is once again proud to support the Cebu XP Soccer team at the Manila Nomads International 6-A-Side Tournament this coming weekend (Nov 7 & 8). Last year the XP won the Plate trophy and will be looking to go even better this year against the 32 participating teams from all around the world. The XP are riding on a high under the new management of Tony Jarman, with 3 trophies from their last 3 outings. Good luck lads, and we look forward to seeing players and supporters at The Gustavian Marquee over the two days of the tournament!

CRICKET

After a prolonged off season, the cricketers take to the Cebu International School Ground once again this month in preparation for the 2^nd Manila Nomads tour to Cebu this coming November 21 & 22. Last year’s tour was a great event and it should certainly be a great weekend again. The Saturday will see a 6’s Tournament with the defending champions, Cebu Indian Cricket Club, joining to give Manila Nomads and the Cebu Vikings a real test. The Sunday will see a Cebu Select XI take on the Manila Nomads. Spectators are welcome on both days and The Gustavian will be catering the day, so refreshments will be available. Come along and support the Cebu Vikings Cricket Club!

RUGBY

The Dragons have been very active over the last few months. A huge congratulations to the Low Flying Dragons, who finished runners-up in the Plate at the Fat Boy 10s last September. This is the best finish for the Dragons to date and came against some very strong competition – including the 6’8” 550lbs 11 time Sumo Wrestling Grand Champion, Akebono!

Congratulations also go to Dragons Club Captain, Noel Flowers, on once again being selected for the Philippine National Team. Noel was a standout player in Octobers 7s tournaments in Brunei and Borneo, where the Philippines caused major upsets and further climbed the rankings in Asian Rugby.

Not to be outdone, and proving that rugby is also a sport for ladies, the Pink Dragons performed outstandingly at the Subic 7s in September! In an historic encounter, the Philippines first competitive ladies full contact rugby match, the Cebu Pink Dragons proved that they are the best team in the Philippines with a decisive 7 tries to 1 victory over a combined Manila Ladies team. There will certainly be a strong Cebu contingent representing the Philippines at next year’s Asian Women’s Rugby Championship! Well done ladies!!!

Now that Rugby 7s is an Olympic Sport, you might want to try it out and have the opportunity of representing your country on the highest possible sporting stage! Drop by the Tap Room any weekend this month and join the Dragons watching the international matches on tv and you will get a real taste for the game!

SHORT MAT BOWLS

The Short Mat Bowlers continue to be probably one of the most social sporting groups in Cebu! There is some competition thrown in as well, and Geoff & Annilou Thomas showed their competitive spirit by retaining their Club Pairs Championship title. The final was an all couples affair, with Bob and Kristine Ward taking the runners-up spot, in a final that produced what has probably been the best game of bowls played in Cebu to date.

The 2009 Club Triples and Fours Championships remain to be played, so come along to social bowls and get involved!

HOW DO I BECOME A GUSTAVIAN LIFESTYLE MEMBER?

It’s easy!! You can join hundreds of Gustavian Lifestyle Members comprising almost 30 different nationalities that are maximizing their lifestyle right Now!!!

If you are currently dining in any one of the Gustavian restaurants or Pubs, simply ask your friendly Service Associate, Waiter, Waitress or Cashier for a Membership Form. Fill in the form, choose the membership category (Individual/Couple/Junior or Corporate) you want and pay the applicable Membership Fee.

You will receive your temporary Membership ID and will be eligible for all Gustavian Lifestyle Benefits and Privileges immediately upon payment of your Joining Fee. This means that you can receive DISCOUNTS ON YOUR BILL RIGHT NOW!!!

If you are not currently at the Gustavian, it’s still easy! Fill up the Membership form and the next time you visit you can submit it along with your Joining Fee to the Service Associate, Waiter, Waitress or Cashier.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AND INDIVIDUAL AND COUPLES LIFESTYLE MEMBERSHIP?

As a Gustavian Lifestyle Member, only you are entitled to the Privileges and Discounts available at the Gustavian and our reciprocal and partner establishments. If you dine with your spouse and/or children, then you may receive discounts on a single bill. However your spouse or children may not use your Lifestyle Membership if you are not with them. They will not have access to the Members Lifestyle Business Lounge either.

As the Gustavian Lifestyle includes activities for all members of the family, we have introduced a discounted Couples Membership and a Junior Membership for your kids aged 13-21 years. In this way the whole family can attend different events in different Gustavian at the same time!

We welcome anyone who wants to learn the game, no matter your size, weight or gender. We have a touch rugby team for the ladies. For the men’s, touch rugby is encouraged as a learning foundation before you move to full contact.

Training sessions are conducted by the Team Captain, Noel Flowers(Philippine Rugby National Player) and Jerry Branzuela. Both have extensive rugby backround from Australia and South Africa. They are also assisted by experienced players in the squad.

Short Mat Bowls

The Cebu Short Mat Bowls Club was started in 2008 and holds weekly social bowls on Sundays at the Silver Hills Clubhouse. The Gustavian has supported the Club since its inception and took over official sponsorship in 2009. Membership has grown significantly and there are a number of annual tournaments. They include Singles, Doubles, Tipples, Fours, Mini World Cup and the Duncan Gallon Cup.

The atmosphere at the Silver Hills Clubhouse is very informal and relaxed so it’s a great venue for bowls. We would like to encourage all Gustavian Lifestyle Passport members to participate in Sunday social bowls and the tournaments as well. Please contact us and we would be happy to introduce you to the rules and techniques of the game on most any Sunday when there is no tournament.

If you are not interested in playing the game, spectators are always welcomed as the environment is very social and the members accommodating and friendly.

The Cebu Cricket Club, better known as the Vikings, is the newest sport to be introduced to Cebu and is keenly supported by the Gustavian. There have already been a number of tour matches played over the past year and there is a strong competitive element apparent in the Vikings matches against the locally based Cebu Indians Cricket Club.

A competitive Cricket League was started last July comprised of the the Vikings, the Cebu Indians Cricket Club and the Cebu Pakistani Cricket Club. The Vikings are always looking to expand their squad so contact us if you are interested in joining the action. The more the merrier and it bolsters the team for league play.

In 2002 a group of expats got together and created the XP Cebu Soccer Club. They played their first tournament in January 2004 in the very enjoyable “Thirsty Cup”. The XP team not only won the tournament in their first outing, but repeated this achievement in 2005 and 2007, with another Semi Final finish in 2006!

Given that the team is largely comprised of expat players, one thing for certain is that the team personnel is forever changing. The XP team currently has players hailing from around the world, including England, Germany, France, Spain, Greece, Italy, Holland, Hungary, Iran, Denmark, Philippines, China, Singapore, The United States and more! New players are most welcome to come and join this thriving team. The XP team plays indoor football every Tuesday & Wednesday evening in Cebu City and every Saturday afternoon at a first class pitch on Mactan Island.
